Ortodonti

Both in the world and in Turkey, orthodontics is the oldest specialty of dentistry.

The word “orthodontics” is a combination of two Greek words. “Orthodontics” is a combination of the words “orthos” meaning “straight” and “odontos” meaning “tooth”. The branch of orthodontics, which was initially concerned with the proper alignment of abnormally aligned teeth, later aimed to correct the relationship of the teeth not only with the tooth next to it but also with the teeth in the opposite jaw and the jawbone. Today, the relationship between the upper and lower jaw and the correction of the relationship of the jaw bones with the facial skeleton are the specialties of orthodontics. Changing the position of the jaw bones is possible with treatments called “functional jaw orthopedics” at an early age, which requires the use of various apparatus to guide growth and development, and with “orthognathic surgery” treatment, that is, interventions that include both braces and jaw surgery at older ages. Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that examines the position of the teeth and jaws in relation to the head, face, and each other and provides diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of anomalies. It is applied not only to eliminate aesthetic concerns but also to correct chewing and speech functions.
Orthodontics, popularly known as “wire treatment”, has different applications such as placeholders applied in early deciduous tooth loss from the age of 7-8, jaw stenosis mostly applied in the growth and development age, fixed and removable oral appliances used in the treatment of skeletal anomaly problems and adult orthodontics.

When is an orthodontic treatment applied?

The first aim of orthodontics is to prevent orthodontic problems in children. For this reason, the orthodontic examination should be performed at the age of 7-8 years in order to apply protective and preventive orthodontic treatments. Ensuring adequate oral hygiene, detection of decayed and missing teeth and protection of missing teeth, and treatment of skeletal anomalies in the growth and development age are among the early orthodontic applications. If the relationship between the jaw bones that carry the teeth is normal, only if the alignment and bite are abnormal of the teeth, it is possible to correct it with braces treatment at both adult and pediatric ages. In case there is good patient cooperation and healthy bone and gum surrounding the teeth, braces treatment can be performed at any age, although there is a possibility of limiting the treatments that can be applied as the age progresses and prolonging the treatment period.

How long does orthodontic treatment last?

Orthodontics, duration of orthodontic treatment varies depending on factors such as the type of treatment applied, patient age, and patient compliance. Depending on the severity of the existing anomaly, the treatment varies between 9 months and 2.5 years.

How often are check-ups during treatment?

Orthodontic control sessions are held at intervals of 4-6 weeks unless there is a special reason. Patients with braces are usually seen every 4 weeks, while patients who use oral appliances are usually seen every 6 weeks. However, we recommend orthodontic treatment with transparent aligners, which is a wire-free treatment method, for patients who come for treatment from out of town or abroad or who cannot come to the control every month. Wireless orthodontic treatment reduces the frequency of appointments.

Does orthodontic treatment cause pain?

There is no pain during the first intraoral application session. Afterward and between sessions, there may be short-term and mild pain caused by the force applied to the teeth. Following your doctor’s recommendations on the subject will facilitate the adaptation process.

Orthodontics what should be considered during treatment?

Strict adherence to the dietary restrictions that your doctor will explain in detail is vital for the continuity of the treatment. In addition, oral hygiene should be at a high level and teeth should be brushed after every meal and before going to bed. Compliance with control sessions is another important point that affects the course of treatment. As long as the braces are in the mouth, acidic drinks should be avoided. One reason for this is that the adhesives of the brackets melt and cause bracket ruptures, while another reason is that acidic beverages increase the caries-forming effect of dental plaque accumulated around the brackets. Bracket ruptures can both prolong the treatment time and damage enamel health. In order to prevent bracket ruptures, patients who prefer braces are asked to stay away from hard foods such as dried nuts during treatment. For patients who do not want to stay away from acidic drinks and hard foods during orthodontic treatment and who want to spend the process more comfortably, we recommend invisalign transparent plaque treatments, which is a wire-free orthodontic treatment method. During orthodontic treatment, braces, and elastics are used. The retainer elastic is an additional mechanic applied in both metal braces, clear braces, and clear aligner treatment. Its regular use in accordance with the doctor’s recommendation will contribute to your treatment time and results.

Patients should not neglect their monthly check-ups, follow the eating prohibitions specified by their doctor and keep their oral hygiene at a maximum level. At the beginning of the treatment and between sessions, short-term mild pain may be felt due to the force applied to the teeth. Complying with the doctor’s warnings and recommendations in this regard will facilitate the process.

After the orthodontics treatment is finished…?

For the teeth and jaws to adapt to their new positions, reinforcement treatment is applied with fixed retainers and removable transparent aligners for varying periods depending on the duration of treatment. The duration of reinforcement with retainers varies for each treatment. Routine dental check-ups every 6 months are important for the continuity of both orthodontic treatment and general oral health.

Orthodontic treatment methods

The most common method used to correct incompatible tooth alignments with orthodontic treatment is metal brackets known as braces. This method allows the teeth to be straightened with the use of brackets bonded to the teeth by the orthodontist and wires and elastics placed on the brackets. The teeth can be straightened with metal brackets known as braces or orthodontic treatment can be applied with porcelain brackets known as transparent braces, which is a more aesthetic option. For our patients who want to have orthodontic treatment without braces, an aesthetic and comfortable treatment process is possible with invisalign transparent plate treatment. Braces prices are the most curious issue for patients. The price of orthodontic treatment varies according to the treatment method used.

Orthodontics, what is clear aligner treatment?

Orthodontics for many years, braces have been applied for the correct alignment of the teeth and correction of chewing and speech functions. However, in recent years, orthodontic treatment applications with transparent aligner systems have come to the agenda with the increase in patients’ expectations for invisible braces. Today, many cases that can be treated with braces can also be treated with the invisalign system, which includes a series of transparent aligners. It involves recording the teeth with an intraoral scanner or impressions and producing a series of clear aligners as a result of digital treatment planning. There are also tooth-colored protrusions placed on the teeth. These attachments, which support the transparent aligners to move the teeth, remain on the teeth during the treatment. In treatments applied with the Invisalign system, patients need to use dental aligners for 20-22 hours a day. Each aligner is changed every 7 to 14 days according to the doctor’s plan. In some treatments, in addition to clear aligners and attachments, support from intraoral elastics and orthodontic mini-screws may be required. The advantages of orthodontic treatment with clear aligners are to make the process more aesthetic, comfortable, and hygienic. The fact that they can be removed for a short period on special occasions such as weddings, engagements, and graduations is also the reason why they are preferred over braces.
